Time to move on
'Adapt or perish'. This may be just a three letter pharase but its implications are much more enormous. The Indian team is in the mode of transformation. Its mighty stalwarts having hung their boots, other nearing the twilight of their illustrious careers and other well never got the hang of test cricket.
It is exhasparating that India with all its talent & energy lag behind in the ultimate test for a cricketer's forte. India's recent test record is abysmal having lost all their matches abroad & now a humiliating 10 wicket loss to less fancied English side.
Its a classic case of falling in trap you laid down for your enemy. Englishmen bambozzled by spin, look at the scorecard. Its the Indian batsmen falling like nine pins against their english counterparts. Yes the truth is india lacks quality spinners. The reality is they aren't being groomed properly.
How many players have been selected into the side purely on the basis of performance. If .one were to reach out for the first class record of the current crop of the players, only a few would merit selection.
Virat Kohli who is prolific one day players, fares poorly when it comes to the 5 day affair.
He is young and perhaps the most promising young player from India today. He must pull up his socks though. It would be absurd to rest on your past laurels.
Then there is curious case of Yuvraj Singh. Too much promise & too little performance has been his undoing for long.
With the amount of cricket being played aroung these days, it would be more prudent to select players suitable for particular formats & conditions. Now for ages we have been seeing Gautam Gambhir getting out giving catching practice in the slip area. This is his primary weapon in the shorter format when bowlers try to stifle him with short ptiched stuff. But it becomes his undoing in the test matches where the ball is harder, more attacking fieldsets.
It is time that the selectors look beyond these players espacially in Test matches. Public inerest in a sport is persisted and developed when their team does well. If your heroes fail time & again the interest fizzles out.
Now if what on earth did Harbhajan Singh do to merit a place in the Indian team. With the way he was being hammered by the local boys no wonder KP enjoyed the dish he was being severed by the lanky sardar.
